Joo Chiat and Katong: Singapore's Peranakan Heritage
Joo Chiat and Katong form the heartland of Singapore's Peranakan (Straits Chinese) culture — a stretch of the city's eastern quarter where pastel-painted shophouses, nyonya cuisine, and intricately beaded ceremonial objects create the most vivid expression of this unique Straits hybrid culture. The Peranakan community descends from Chinese migrants who settled in the Malay Archipelago from the 15th century onward, adopting Malay language, dress, and culinary traditions while maintaining Chinese religious practices — creating a distinct culture expressed most fully in its extraordinary cuisine and decorative arts. Joo Chiat Road and East Coast Road are the twin spines of this neighbourhood, both lined with some of the finest examples of terrace shophouse architecture in Singapore.
The nyonya cuisine here is the best reason to visit — katong laksa in the local style (a soupy version with cut noodles unlike dry variants found elsewhere), ayam buah keluak (chicken cooked with the black nut native to Southeast Asian mangrove swamps), and kueh (steamed rice-flour cakes in elaborate shapes coloured with pandan) that are as beautiful to look at as to eat. Kim Choo Kueh Chang on East Coast Road has been making traditional nyonya kueh and dumplings since 1945. The neighbourhood is also home to some of Singapore's finest independent restaurants and bars that complement rather than displace the heritage food culture.
The colourful terrace houses along Koon Seng Road are among the most photographed in Singapore — their ornate plasterwork facades in shades of ochre, turquoise, and rose representing the pinnacle of Straits Eclectic architecture. The Katong Antique House at 208 East Coast Road is a private museum of Peranakan heritage objects collected over decades — call ahead to arrange a visit with the passionate owner who can explain the significance of each piece. Take MRT to Paya Lebar station, then a short taxi or bus ride east along East Coast Road into the heart of the neighbourhood.
