MacRitchie Reservoir: Singapore's Jungle Heart

MacRitchie Reservoir is Singapore's oldest and most beloved green space — a forested water catchment area in the central part of the island that offers the city's finest hiking, wildlife encounters, and a genuine sense of being immersed in tropical rainforest just minutes from the urban centre. Macaque colonies inhabit the forest throughout the reserve and are frequently visible along the reservoir boardwalk — keep food in sealed bags as the monkeys are bold and experienced at bag-snatching from unwary visitors.

The 11-kilometre HSBC TreeTop Trail circuit is a full morning's commitment, passing through diverse forest habitats and along the reservoir edge with consistent natural beauty. The trails are best hiked before 10am, particularly between March and September when afternoon temperatures make extended outdoor exercise difficult. Kayaking on the reservoir can be booked through the Singapore Island Country Club for members and guests. The reservoir boardwalk near the main carpark is a shorter, easier option for families or those wanting a gentle nature walk rather than a full hiking circuit — the views across the still water at dawn are extraordinary.
